My Cousin, Arthur Hokett departed from this life after a life as a missionary in Africa. Thank you for giving to the Lord.
Rev. Arthur E. Hokett, Jr., 73, entered into heaven on Saturday, August 6, in Pasadena, TX. He was born to Arthur Elvis Hokett, Sr., and Pauline Nagel Hokett on May 31, 1938, in Goliad, TX, and grew up in Cuero, Houston, and Pasadena.
He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Doris, one beloved son, Jeff, his wife Sandra, and their three young sons, Alex, Spencer, and Richard, of Virginia. He is also survived by one brother, Arlon Everett Hokett of Baytown and one sister, Martha Holcomb of The Woodlands.
As a young teenager, Arthur felt called by God to be a missionary in Africa, and he looked forward to missions service after graduating from Pasadena High School in 1956.
Arthur married Doris Hinkle in Houston on Sept. 20, 1957, and they both graduated with Bachelor of Arts degrees from Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie, TX, in 1961. Later they both received honorary Doctor of Theology degrees in 1992, from Levites Theological Seminary in Lagos, Nigeria.
After pastoring a church in Yoakum, TX, for 4 1/2 years, also serving as evangelists, Arthur and Doris were appointed as missionaries to Ghana, West Africa, in 1966. For the next 45 years, they served together in Africa, living first in Ghana, and most recently in Lagos, Nigeria. They have mniistered under trees in tiny villages, in churches of all sizes in towns and cities, and in stadiums and mega-churches across Africa. Arthur helped to build 46 churches in northern Ghana, and he recently said he desired to help finish at least 50 churches there.
While living in Ghana, he served as National Youth Coordinator for the Ghana Assemblies of God, helping to organize many very successful youth camps, rallies, and Bible Quiz competitions. He also worked with many pastors and churches and preached in crusades, seminars, conferences, and Bible schools all over Ghana. After moving to Lagos in 1988, Arthur ministered throughout Nigeria also.
Arthur worked tirelessly with hundreds of pastors in many different countries. He traveled with Doris as missionary evangelists to other regions of Africa, preaching in Burkina Faso, Benin, Togo, Niger, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Swaziland, Lesotho, and South Africa.
Outside of Africa, the couple also ministered together in England, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, El Salvador, and Haiti. Every 2 years, they traveled to India, preaching there 13 different times.
Together Arthur and Doris wrote 13 books, publishing most of them in Nigeria. Several of these books have been translated into other languages in various countries. Countless ministers and friends around the world have loved Arthur, and each has been blessed by his ministry.
The family will receive friends at Niday Funeral Home, 12440 Beamer, in southeast Houston, on Thursday, August 11, from 5 to 8 PM. A service will be held at Faith Assembly of God, 3940 Vista, in Pasadena, at 10 AM on Friday, August 12.
